Urea Agar Base Dehydrated Culture Media
Manufacturer: Neogen Inc.
Description
The medium's primary benefit is its efficiency as a differential test. Urease production breaks down urea, releasing ammonia, which causes the pH of the medium to rise sharply. This rapid alkalinity is revealed by a clear color change in the medium (inferred to be pink/red due to Phenol Red indicator, commonly used in this medium), providing an unmistakable positive result. This agar base is essential for screening Salmonella and Shigella cultures for serologic classification and is routinely used to detect urease production by yeast.
Please note: Urea Agar Base is used with agar (for solidification) for the differentiation of microorganisms and is not intended for use in the diagnosis of disease or other conditions in humans.
Features:
- Used for the differentiation of microorganisms based on urease production
- Reduced buffer content supports vigorous growth while permitting clear observation of urease activity
- Ideal for screening Gram-negative enteric bacilli, including presumptive identification of Salmonella and Shigella
- Reliable for detecting urease production by yeast species
- Conforms to standard methods for an important differential test in microbiology
