Triple Sugar Iron Agar Dehydrated Culture Media
Manufacturer: Neogen Inc.
Description
The medium’s core strength is its powerful, multi-functional differentiation system. It contains dextrose, lactose, and sucrose as fermentable carbohydrates, with Phenol Red as a pH indicator to reveal acid production (yellow color). For gas and H2S production, it includes iron salts and Sodium Thiosulfate. This four-way differentiation—acid/alkaline slant, butt reaction, gas production, and blackening due to H2S—allows for the rapid presumptive identification of enteric organisms. Its formula is a time-tested modification used extensively in diagnostic microbiology.
Please note: This medium should be used in conjunction with a urease test to eliminate Proteus spp. when screening for Salmonella spp. It is not intended for use in the diagnosis of disease or other conditions in humans.
Features:
- Used for the differentiation of microorganisms based on dextrose, lactose, and sucrose fermentation
- System detects hydrogen sulfide (H2S) production (blackening of the medium)
- Contains Phenol Red as an indicator to reveal acid production from fermentation
- Recommended for differentiation of enteric, Gram-negative bacilli from clinical and food samples
- Formula is a classic modification that simplifies enteric organism identification
