Hektoen Enteric (HE) Agar Dehydrated Culture Media

Hektoen Enteric Agar provides a dual layer of selectivity and differentiation. The bile salts mixture and Acid Fuchsin inhibit the growth of Gram-positive microorganisms, while allowing the target pathogens to thrive. The medium contains three fermentable carbohydrates, lactose, sucrose, and salicin, which are used for differentiation. A pH indicator, Bromothymol Blue, is also included to detect acid production from fermentation. Furthermore, Ferric Ammonium Citrate and Sodium Thiosulfate allow for the detection of hydrogen sulfide (H₂S) production, which is indicated by colonies with characteristic black centers, a key trait of many Salmonella species. This combination of features makes HE Agar an indispensable tool for accurate and reliable enteric pathogen testing.
