Violet Red Bile Agar Dehydrated Culture Media
Manufacturer: Neogen Inc.
Description
The medium’s core strength is its powerful dual selective and differential system. Bile Salts and Crystal Violet (inferred from the name "Violet Red Bile") act as potent selective agents, inhibiting the growth of most Gram-positive and non-coliform organisms. For differentiation, Lactose fermentation by coliforms lowers the medium’s pH. This pH drop is indicated by Neutral Red dye, causing coliform colonies to look red and to precipitate the bile salts, creating a surrounding halo or zone. This clear visual result streamlines the presumptive identification process.
Please note: Violet Red Bile Agar is for laboratory use in the enumeration of coliforms and is not intended for use in the diagnosis of disease or other conditions in humans.
Features:
- Selective and differential medium used for the enumeration of coliforms in food and dairy products
- Conforms to the American Public Health Association (APHA) standard method
- Bile Salts and Violet Red inhibit most Gram-positive and non-coliform bacteria
- Coliform colonies appear red and precipitate bile salts (halo effect) due to lactose fermentation
- Ideal for the presumptive identification of Enterobacteriaceae species
