The medium's dual functionality is its key advantage. Bile salts and Crystal Violet act as powerful selective agents, inhibiting the growth of most Gram-positive bacteria. For differentiation, Lactose is included as a fermentable carbohydrate and Neutral Red as a pH indicator. Strong lactose fermenters, like E. coli, produce a significant amount of acid, which causes a drop in pH that results in distinct pink colonies and often a surrounding bile precipitate or "halo". Non-lactose fermenters, such as Salmonella, grow but remain colorless, providing a clear distinction. The medium conforms to Harmonized USP/EP/JP Requirements and FDA/BAM, ensuring its reliability for compliance-critical applications.
