The medium's core strength is its unique non-CO2 buffering system. It is formulated without sodium bicarbonate and relies on phosphates and the L-arginine amino acid for buffering capacity. Furthermore, it prevents the formation of inhibitory acid byproducts by replacing glucose with galactose and sodium pyruvate as the energy sources. This makes L-15 ideal for use in open systems and simplified setups.
