Eosin Methylene Blue (EMB) Agar Levine Dehydrated Culture Media
Manufacturer: Neogen Inc.
Description
The medium's primary benefit is its ability to produce a characteristic metallic green sheen. This distinctive reaction is caused by the robust fermentation of lactose by E. coli, which produces enough acid to create an amide bonding between the Eosin and Methylene Blue dyes. Other coliforms do not produce this reaction, making the differentiation clear and simple. The presence of these dyes also inhibits the growth of most Gram-positive organisms, ensuring a high degree of selectivity for your target bacteria.
Please note: The prepared medium is sensitive to light and should be stored in the dark. This product is not intended for use in the diagnosis of disease or other conditions in humans.
Features:
- Used for the isolation and differentiation of Gram-negative enteric bacilli
- Eosin and Methylene Blue dyes provide selectivity against Gram-positive organisms
- Strong lactose fermenters like E. coli produce a distinctive metallic green sheen
- Ideal for the presumptive identification of E. coli
- Contains peptone and lactose for robust microbial growth
