Gentian Violet, 1% Aqueous
Manufacturer: LabChem Inc.
Description
Features:
- Gram Stain Essential: Functions by infiltrating the peptidoglycan layer of bacterial cell walls, forming a deep purple complex that identifies Gram-positive organisms.
- Gentle Staining: The aqueous matrix prevents the rapid cell shrinkage and dehydration associated with alcohol-based Gentian Violet stains.
- pH Sensitivity: Acts as a pH indicator, transitioning from green/yellow at highly acidic levels (pH 0.0) to blue/violet as the pH increases (pH 2.0).
- Microbiological Utility: Beyond staining, it can be used as a selective agent in culture media to inhibit the growth of most Gram-positive bacteria while allowing Gram-negatives to thrive.
Safety & Regulatory Information:
WARNING! Potential Health Hazard: Gentian Violet is a powerful dye and a suspected carcinogen (classified under CA Prop 65). It can cause serious eye irritation and is toxic to aquatic life.
- Personal Protection: Wear nitrile gloves, a lab coat, and splash goggles. Gentian Violet will cause persistent purple staining on skin, clothing, and laboratory surfaces.
- Stain Removal: If skin contact occurs, wash immediately with soap and water. Persistent stains can often be lightened with a 70% isopropyl alcohol wipe or a very dilute bleach solution, followed by thorough rinsing.
- Storage: Store at room temperature (15°C to 30°C) in a tightly closed container. Protect from direct sunlight and keep away from strong oxidizing agents.
