Fehling's Solution B (Alkaline No. 2)
Manufacturer: LabChem Inc.
Description
Features:
- Chelating Action: The Rochelle salt in Solution B acts as a ligand, preventing the precipitation of copper(II) hydroxide in the alkaline mixture, keeping the copper available for the reaction.
- Vivid Results: When mixed with Solution A and heated with a reducing sugar, the solution produces a distinct brick-red precipitate of cuprous oxide (Cu2O).
- Method Compliance: Formulated to meet standard qualitative and quantitative procedures for the analysis of aldehydes and sugars.
- Extended Shelf Life: Prepared under strict quality controls to ensure the alkaline component remains stable for long-term storage in high-density polyethylene (HDPE) containers.
Safety & Handling:
DANGER! Corrosive Material: This solution contains Sodium Hydroxide and is highly alkaline. It can cause severe skin burns and serious eye damage.
- Personal Protection: Use chemical-resistant nitrile gloves, safety goggles/face shield, and a lab coat. Handle in a well-ventilated area.
- Storage: Store at room temperature (15°C-30°C) in the original plastic container. Keep away from acids and aluminum.
- Preparation Note: Always mix Solution "A" and "B" in equal parts only at the time of the test, as the combined reagent is not stable for long-term storage.
