Eriochrome® Blue-Black R (also known as Calcon) from LabChem Inc. is a specialized metallochromic indicator used in complexometric titrations. Unlike Eriochrome Black T, which reacts with both calcium and magnesium, Eriochrome Blue-Black R is primarily utilized for the selective titration of Calcium (Ca2+) at a high pH (approx. 12–14). In this range, magnesium precipitates as a hydroxide, allowing the indicator to provide a sharp color transition specifically for calcium.

Features:

- Sharp Color Transition: Changes from wine-red to a distinct pure blue at the EDTA titration endpoint, facilitating highly accurate volumetric results.
- High Sensitivity: Frequently used in the analysis of cement, pharmaceuticals, and environmental water samples where calcium/magnesium ratios are critical.
- Biological Application: Also serves as a specialized protein stain in electrophoresis and a histology dye for aluminum detection in tissue.
Safety & Handling:
WARNING! Irritant: Causes serious eye irritation and may cause skin and respiratory irritation.
- Personal Protection: Wear standard laboratory PPE, including nitrile gloves, safety goggles, and a lab coat. Avoid breathing dust.
- Storage: Store at room temperature (15°C-30°C) in the original container. Keep tightly closed and protect from light to prevent degradation of the azo-dye structure.
- Titration Tip: For best results in calcium determination, use a high-pH buffer (e.g., Sodium Hydroxide) to ensure Magnesium is fully masked as Mg(OH)2.
