Diphenylamine, 1% in Sulfuric Acid
Manufacturer: LabChem Inc.
Description
Features:
- Instantaneous Results: Provides an almost immediate blue-black color shift, making it an ideal screening tool for rapid field and laboratory assessments.
- Specialized Conservation Use: Frequently used by archivists to identify cellulose nitrate in historic film and photographs; can be diluted to 0.8% in 80% acid for safer material handling.
- Ready-to-Use: Eliminates the hazardous and exothermic task of manually dissolving diphenylamine crystals in concentrated sulfuric acid.
- High Sensitivity: Detects trace levels of nitrates in water, hay, silage, and industrial samples.
Safety & Handling:
DANGER! Extremely Corrosive & Toxic: This solution contains concentrated sulfuric acid. It causes severe skin burns, permanent eye damage, and is fatal if inhaled in mist form.
- Personal Protection: Required: Acid-resistant gloves (nitrile or neoprene), chemical goggles or a full face shield, and a protective lab coat. Always handle under a fume hood.
- Water Reactivity: NEVER add water to this container. If diluting, always add the acid solution slowly to water to prevent violent spattering.
- Storage: Store at room temperature in a dedicated corrosives cabinet. Protect from direct sunlight to prevent the reagent from turning brown or blue, which indicates contamination.
