Unlike the "Clear" PET versions, Polycarbonate membranes are translucent, which provides a high pore density for maximum molecular exchange. Because they are translucent, cells must be stained (e.g., with Crystal Violet or DAPI) for visualization under a microscope, making them ideal for endpoint assays where precise quantification is required.

Pore Size Application Guide
Choosing the correct pore size is critical for the success of your assay:
- 0.4 µm: The gold standard for drug transport (Caco-2), toxicity screening, and co-culture without cell migration
- 3.0 µm: Optimized for chemotaxis and studying the migration of leukocytes or other smaller cells
- 5.0 to 8.0 µm: Specifically designed for tumor cell invasion and migration assays where larger cells must pass through the membrane
Pro-Tip: Visualizing Your Cells:
Because Polycarbonate membranes are translucent, you cannot see your cells clearly using standard phase-contrast microscopy while they are on the membrane. For best results:
- Fix the cells with 4% Paraformaldehyde.
- Stain with a DNA-binding dye (like Hoechst or DAPI) or a cytoplasmic stain.
- Remove the membrane from the insert with a scalpel and mount it on a glass slide for high-resolution imaging.
