Complete 24/40 Flat Bottom Fractional Distilling Kits with Vigreux Column
Manufacturer: The Lab Depot
Description
The addition of the Vigreux Column provides multiple "theoretical plates" of separation, which is essential for isolating liquids with relatively close boiling points. As vapor rises through the column, it interacts with the internal glass indentations, allowing less volatile components to condense and reflux while the more volatile "fractions" proceed to the condenser.
Features:
- Fractional Distillation Ready: Includes a Vigreux column (200 mm or 500 mm) for significantly higher purity compared to simple distillation
- Flat Bottom Advantage: Flasks stand independently on flat surfaces and maximize contact with hotplates for consistent thermal transfer
- Standardized Joints: All components feature 24/40 ground glass joints, providing a secure, airtight fit and compatibility with a wide range of standard laboratory glassware
- Complete Hardware: Includes heavy-duty cast iron stands and rubber-coated clamps to ensure a stable and safe assembly
- Durable Glassware: Manufactured from high-quality borosilicate glass to withstand thermal stress and chemical attack
Each kit is a "ready-to-run" system (just add a thermometer and heat source):
- Vigreux Fractionating Column: Enhances vapor-liquid contact for superior separation of components with close boiling points
- 24/40 Liebig Condenser: A straight-tube heat exchanger designed for high-flow cooling and efficient condensation
- Boiling & Receiving Flasks: 2 Heavy-duty borosilicate flat bottom flasks (sizes vary by kit)
- Precision Adapters: Includes a 3-way 24/40 distilling adapter (connecting the column, condenser, and thermometer), a 105° bent 24/40 adapter for receiving the distillate, a thermometer adapter
- Mounting Hardware: Professional-grade rubber-coated burette clamps for secure assembly
- Stands: 5 in x 8 in Cast Iron Base (Kits TLDKT3000FBR & TLDKT5000FBR include two stands/clamps)
- 5 Keck Clamps: Color-coded clips to lock ground glass joints in place during operation
Critical Setup Tips:
- Because these kits do not include a thermometer, you will need to source one to monitor the vapor temperature at the top of the Vigreux column to ensure you are collecting the correct fraction
- To prevent "bumping" (violent boiling) in flat-bottom flasks, always use boiling stones or a magnetic stir bar during the distillation process
- Connect your water source so it enters the bottom port of the Liebig condenser and exits the top port to ensure the jacket is completely filled with cooling water
NOTE: These kits do not include a thermometer.
